CABS Initial Assessments...
The first edition of CABS was largely skills-based in approach, so a second edition in September 1997 introduced the use of learning outcomes demonstrations in CABS initial assessments. The publication of this third edition reflects ongoing developments in the field: Specifically, CABS now incorporates criteria from both the 5-level Working with Learning Outcomes Validation Draft and the supplemental Level Descriptions to remain relevant to current practice. |
Using both the Validation Draft (the Matrix) and the Level Descriptions creates a consistent, yet flexible assessment approach, with results that are transferrable among service providers. The authors intended that this would contribute to effective literacy practice by making initial assessment easy and practical for programs and beneficial to students. The CABS InterviewThe purpose of the interview is to gather relevant information from the client which will help you determine the most appropriate program and starting points. Data collection focuses on prior learning successes and challenges, skills that are actively used, and any identified goals. However, the interview approach is holistic, in that it targets the broad abilities of the whole person, not just those skills defined as academic. All useful information gets recorded on the CABS Initial Assessment Report. |
